How to obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine

This article describes how to determine the current Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine release level. This article gives you information about how to download the latest service pack for the Jet 4.0 Database Engine, gives you setup instructions, lists the files that are included with the latest Jet service pack and Jet security bulletins, and then gives you the history of the Jet 4.0 service packs.

How to determine the current release level of Jet 4.0

To determine the Jet 4.0 release level that is currently installed on your computer, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Msjet40.dll, and then click Search.
4. In the list of files, right-click the Msjet40.dll file that is located in the Windows\System32 folder or in the Windows\System folder, and then click Properties.
   
   Note On 64-bit versions of Windows operating systems, the Msjet40.dll file is in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder.
5. Click the Version tab, and then use the following table to determine the current Jet 4.0 service pack level:

Note If you have a version of Msjet40.dll that is not previously listed, you probably have a hotfix installed. If this is the case, go back to the next earlier version number to determine your release level.

Download the latest Jet 4.0 service pack

There are five versions of the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 (SP8) download.

• The first download is only for computers that are running Windows 2000.
• The second download is only for computers that are running Windows XP.
• The third download is only for computers that are running Windows Server 2003.
• The fourth download is only for computers that are running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0.
• The fifth download is only for computers that are running Windows Millennium Edition.

Each download contains updated versions of several .dll files that are included with Windows 2000 and later, Access 2000, Access 2002, Microsoft Office 2000 Developer, Microsoft Office XP Developer, Microsoft Visual Basic version 6.0 and later, and other Microsoft products that incorporate the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine.

The Access 2002 Setup program only updates system files on certain versions of Windows and to a certain level. The Access 2003 Setup program does not update any system files. Therefore, after you install Access you may not have the latest version of the Jet 4.0 Database Engine. Use the links in this article to obtain the latest service pack for the Jet 4.0 Database Engine.

If you have previously installed the latest Jet service pack for Access or for another application that uses the Jet 4.0 Database Engine, you do not have to install the latest Jet service pack for Access again if you install a later version of Access.

For computers that are running Windows Vista and later versions

If you are running Windows Vista or a later version, you have a later version of Jet 4.0 than the version that is included with Jet 4.0 SP8.

For computers that are running Windows Server 2008 and later versions

If you are running Windows Server 2008 or a later version, you have a later version of Jet 4.0 than the version that is included with Jet 4.0 SP8 

For computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP

If you are running Windows XP SP2, you have a later version of Jet 4.0 than the version that is included with Jet 4.0 SP8. We recommend that you install the latest service pack for Windows XP. For computers that are running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Use Jet40SP8_WMe.exe to install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 on computers that are running Windows Millennium Edition. Download the Jet40SP8_WMe.exe package now.

How to install the latest Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8

The Jet 4.0 service packs are self-expanding archives that expand the files to the appropriate folder. To install the latest Jet 4.0 service pack, follow these steps:

1. Download the appropriate version of the Jet service pack for your computer.
2. In Windows Explorer, double-click the file that you downloaded in step 1 to start the Jet service pack Setup.
3. Restart your computer.

Files in the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8

If you obtain the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 download for computers that are running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, you will also receive the ODBC Desktop Driver Pack drivers. These drivers are included with the Windows 2000 operating system, the Windows XP operating system, and the Windows Server 2003 operating system. To correctly register the ODBC drivers on your computer, you also must install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6 or later. MDAC does not include these driver files, but MDAC does include the core ODBC DLLs that are required to install the drivers and to use the drivers.
