SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
You use the Dfsutil.exe utility to export Distributed File System (DFS) configuration data from a DFS link. For example, you export DFS namespace information to a file by using the following command:

dfsutil /root: dfs_root /export: <file_name>
You use the same utility to import the exported data to the DFS link.

In this scenario, the discretionary access control list (DACL) of the DFS link is corrupted after the importing operation.

CAUSE

The issue occurs because the DFS service incorrectly corrupts a security identifier (SID) in the DACL list during the exporting process.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
