FIX: "Access is denied. [0x80070005]" error message occurs in SSCM when you try to change the password of an account of SQL Server 2008 R2 in Windows Vista or in a later version of Windows

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a Windows account to log on to a computer that is running Windows Vista or a later version of Windows.
  • You use the Windows account to configure an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on the computer.
  • You change the Windows account password.
  • You try to update the password for the instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 in SQL Server Configuration Manager (SSCM).

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Access is denied. [0x80070005]

RESOLUTION

Cumulative update information

SQL Server 2008 R2

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. In SSCM, change the instance of SQL Server to a different account. For example, click Built-in account, and then select the Local System account.
  2. Change the instance of SQL Server back to the original account by using the new password of the Windows account.
