Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP1 server that has the Mailbox server role installed.

  • The name of the Exchange Server 2010 SP1 server contains one or more lowercase characters. For example, the name of the server is Mailboxserver.

  • You add this server to a Database Availability Group (DAG).

  • You open the Exchange Management Console (EMC), and then you try to view the mailbox database copies in the DAG.

In this scenario, you cannot view the mailbox database copies that are hosted on this server.
Note This issue occurs when you have Exchange Server 2010 SP1 installed.

Cause

This issue occurs because the EMC performs a case-sensitive string compare. However, the EMC incorrectly assumes that all characters in the server name string are capital characters. Therefore, the EMC ignores the server if the server name contains one or more lowercase characters.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2529939 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  1. Run the following cmdlet that is provided by the Exchange Management Shell (EMS) to view the mailbox database copies:

    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus

  2. Change all characters of the server name within the configuration container to capital characters. You can do this by using the Active Directory Service Interfaces Editor (ADSI Edit):

    1. Open the ADSI Edit tool.

    2. Connect ADSI Edit to the Configuration naming context.

    3. Locate the following item:
      CN=Configuration,...\CN=Services\CN=Microsoft Exchange\CN=<organization name>\CN=Administrative Groups\CN=<admin groups>\CN=Servers\CN=<server name>

    4. Right-click the CN=<server name> item, and then select Rename.

    5. Change all characters to capital characters.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
