WD97: Document Opened in Internet Explorer Appears Inaccessible; Exception AV May Occur

SYMPTOMS

When you have a Word 97 document in Internet Explorer that is in place and you switch to another instance of Word or another in-place Word document in Internet Explorer, the focus may be lost and you may be unable to edit the document.

Additionally, if the separate instance of Word 97 is minimized, you may receive an Exception Access Violation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, try one of the following:
  • Open the Word 97 document outside Internet Explorer, as explained in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

    -or-
  • Upgrade to Word 2000 and Internet Explorer version 5.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem does not occur in Word 2000.
