This article describes how to manually uninstall Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 95 when you are unable to uninstall Internet Explorer by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

Notes

  • You cannot use the steps in this article to uninstall Internet Explorer from Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or to uninstall earlier versions of Internet Explorer from any version of Windows.
  • Do not follow the steps in this article if you have not tried to uninstall Internet Explorer 5 by using the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

NOTE : Make sure to have the following items available before you begin these steps:
  • Your original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM
  • A copy of Internet Explorer 4.0 or later on CD-ROM or in a folder on the hard disk
  • If you have Windows 95 on CD-ROM, you need a Startup or boot disk with CD-ROM support
Internet Explorer 5 does not include the Ieremove utility that is included with Internet Explorer 4.x. If Ieremove is still on your computer, do not use it to remove Internet Explorer 5. After you try the steps in the article listed above, use the following steps to uninstall Internet Explorer 5:
  1. As stated in the article listed above, remove any Internet Explorer 5 add-ons and components that are listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
  2. Use Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) to delete the following items:

    Delete the Version value located in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
    Delete the Active Setup key located under:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
    Delete the Active Setup key located under:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft
    Delete the "Plus! VersionNumber" value located in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
    Delete the 100 key located under:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration
  3. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Quit Registry Editor.
  4. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8, and then choose Command Prompt Only .
  5. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command. If necessary, replace "c:\windows" with the drive and path to your installation of Windows 95:
    ren c:\windows\system\inetcpl.cpl inetcpl.old
    ren c:\windows\system\ole2.dll ole2.old
    ren c:\windows\system\ole32.dll ole32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll oleaut32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\olepro32.dll olepro32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\olethk32.dll olethk32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\setupwbv.dll setupwbv.old
    ren c:\windows\system\softpub.dll softpub.old
    ren c:\windows\system\stdole2.tlb stdole2.old
    ren c:\windows\system\urlmon.dll urlmon.old
    ren c:\windows\system\wininet.dll wininet.old
    ren c:\windows\system\wintrust.dll wintrust.old
    ren c:\windows\system\comctl32.dll comctl32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shdoc401.dll shdoc401.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll shdoclc.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shd401lc.dll shd401lc.old
    ren c:\windows\system\inseng.dll inseng.old
    ren c:\windows\system\jobexec.dll jobexec.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old
    ren c:\windows\system\iedkcs32.dll iedkcs32.old
    ren c:\windows\system\thumbvw.dll thumbvw.old
    ren c:\windows\system\occache.dll occache.old
    ren c:\windows\system\webcheck.dll webcheck.old
    ren c:\windows\system\schannel.dll schannel.old
    ren c:\windows\system\rsabase.dll rsabase.old
    ren c:\windows\system\cdfview.dll cdfview.old
    ren c:\windows\system\mmutilse.dll mmutilse.old
    ren c:\windows\system\mmefxe.ocx mmefxe.old
    ren c:\windows\system\daxctle.ocx daxctle.old
    ren c:\windows\system\proctexe.ocx proctexe.old

    NOTE : This procedure assumes that you do not already have files with these names with an .old extension. If you do have files with these names with an .old extension, use a file name extension that is not currently in use.

    NOTE : If you installed the Windows Desktop Update component from Internet Explorer 4.x before installing Internet Explorer 5, you must remove it before proceeding. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
    ren c:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.old
    ren c:\windows\system\shell32.dll shell32.old
  6. Delete the Active Setup key located under: If you have Windows 95 on CD-ROM, restart your computer with a Startup or boot disk that provides access to the CD-ROM drive. If you do not have a bootable disk that provides CD-ROM support, see the "Startup Disk Drivers" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
    135174 Cannot Access CD-ROM Drive from MS-DOS mode or Command Prompt
  7. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Reinstall Windows 95. When you are notified that a file that is being copied is older than the version currently on your computer, click No or No To All .

    If you do not click No or No To All , you may experience problems with the Java Virtual Machine (VM) and trust checking. Also, the Internet Explorer 5 Setup Wizard may not work correctly if you later attempt to reinstall Internet Explorer 5.
  8. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Reinstall Internet Explorer 4.0. If you had Active Desktop installed before installing Internet Explorer 5, you must reinstall it. If you do not want Active Desktop, install it during Setup, and then uninstall it after Setup is finished. This removes any remnant settings and dialog boxes that may cause problems.
  9. Delete the Active Setup key located under: Reinstall any damaged drivers.
  10. Delete the Active Setup key located under: After Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed, upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.
