SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Explorer in Windows NT Workstation, the Shut Down menu may be elongated and may scroll off the screen.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a policy for Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 clients is installed on a Windows NT-based computer.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WinOldApp
Change the data value of the NoRealMode value from 1 to 0.

MORE INFORMATION

This policy is intended to prevent Windows 95 or Windows 98 clients from rebooting to MS-DOS mode from within Windows.
