Publisher 2000 quits unexpectedly when you save a publication as a Publisher 98 file

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a Microsoft Publisher 2000 publication as a Microsoft Publisher 98 file, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

You may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details you receive the following error message:
Mspub caused an invalid page fault in module Mspub.exe.
You may receive the following message:
This publication may lose some formatting if saved for a previous version of Publisher. For more information about formatting that may be lost, press F1 now.

To continue saving for a previous version of Publisher, click OK. To stop saving and return to your publication, click Cancel.
If you click Cancel, you are returned to the Publisher 2000 screen.

If you click OK, you receive the following error message, and then the program quits unexpectedly:
Mspub.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
When you click OK, the program quits unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:

One or more images in the publication are no longer associated with the file name or file type with which they were associated when they were inserted or last updated.

Publisher 2000 requires that a file name and an image type be associated with each image in a publication.
You replace or change the color of a repeating image in one of the Holiday greeting cards or Holiday postcards.

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, determine which image is no longer associated with a file name or file type. To do this:

Start Publisher 2000.
Open the publication that contains the image.
On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Graphics Manager.
In the Graphics Manager window, any image no longer associated with a file name or file type is listed in the following manner:
- Under Name, the image is listed as "Graphic_#" where "#" is a unique number.
- Under Type, the image is listed as "--" to indicate that the file type information is missing.

When you find the problem image, reestablish a link to the image. To do this:

In Graphics Manager, click Create Link.
In the Create Link dialog box, click Create a file from the full-resolution graphic stored in the publication and link to that.
Click Create.
In the File name box, type the file name you want or allow the default file name to remain.
In the Save in box, browse to the location where you want to save the file.
Click Save.
Repeat steps one through six for each problem image you find in Graphics Manager.
When you finish linking all of the problem images, click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
