XCON: How to Disable Sending Friendly Names Outside the Exchange 2000 Organization

In Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and earlier versions, you can prevent the sender's display name (also referred to as a "friendly" name) from being sent to the Internet. This behavior is designed to prevent a MAPI-submitted message from sending a display name when the message is outbound to the Internet.

In Exchange 2000 Server, this feature is provided, but at a different location.

In Exchange Server 5.5, you can set the option to prevent a sender's display name from being propagated to the Internet on the Internet Mail Service Properties dialog box:

1. Click the Internet Mail tab, and then click Advanced Options.
2. On the Advanced Options dialog box, click to select the Disable sending Display names to the Internet check box to prevent display names from being sent to the Internet. It is not checked by default.

In Exchange 2000, to enable the equivalent option:

1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. In the left pane, expand the Global Settings node.
3. In the left pane, click the Internet Message Formats node.
4. In the right pane, right-click one of the entries, and then click Properties.
   
   NOTE: Each entry (leaf object) on the right side represents a specific domain for which message formats may have been defined. By default, there is only one leaf object named "Default," which represents the default domain "*".
5. On the Advanced tab of the object properties, click to clear the Preserve sender's display name on message check box.
