Internet Explorer Does Not Connect Using 128-Bit SGC Encryption

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a Web server with Server Gated Cryptography (SGC) encryption, you may not be able to connect if you attempt to connect by using the site's IP address instead of the site's fully qualified domain name.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of an error in the way Internet Explorer handles the SGC negotiation. Instead of not allowing the 128-bit connection and making a 40-bit connection, the connection is being denied.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Interent Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1.
