Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

  • You access some shared files or printers by using an application or a service on the computer.

In this scenario, you cannot access the shared files or printers, and you receive one of the following error messages:

  • Win32 error 2 - The system cannot find the file specified.

  • Win32 error 6 - invalid handle.

  • Win32 error 64 - The specified network name is no longer available.

For example, assume that you use the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Parallel Data Warehouse backup function to back up a database. In this situation, you receive one of the error messages when SQL Server 2008 backs up data to the Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 node.

Cause

The issue occurs because of an error in the Server Message Block 2 (SMB2) server driver.

The SMB2 server driver maintains file handles for the purpose of reusing them after the related SMB2 session is disconnected. However, the SMB2 server driver does not manage these file handles well. The related file objects are incorrectly deleted when these handles are reused. This behavior results in the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Resolution
