MOD2000: You Cannot Install an Access Run-Time Application on Terminal Server

If you try to run Setup for a solution that includes the Access Run-Time version, during the Access Run-Time version Setup, you may receive the following error message:

The Access 2000 Run-Time version cannot be installed on Terminal Server without a special transform, which is available for download (see the "Resolution" section). Also, there is no tool on the Office Resource Kit CD that can create the correct transform for the Access Run-Time version Setup. The error message is actually referring to a workaround that you can use with Microsoft Office 2000 Setup.

Following are two options that will enable you to run your Access application on Terminal Server:

Install Access Run-Time version with a Special Transform

A transform (MST file) is now available to support deployment of the Access 2000 Run-Time version on computers running Windows Terminal Server. However, it must be a separate installation because a custom Setup of the Access Run-Time version with a Transform cannot be incorporated into your package.

1. Download the Access 2000 Runtime for Terminal Server Transform from the following Microsoft Web site:
   http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/download/Termsrvr_ART.mst (http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/download/Termsrvr_ART.mst)
   NOTE: Transforms can be applied only when you initially deploy the Microsoft Access Runtime. You cannot reapply a new transform to an existing installation.
2. To install the transform, you should begin by copying the MST file to the following folder on your computer. If necessary, create the folders as needed:
   C:\Program Files\ORKTools\Toolbox\Tools\Terminal Server Tools
3. Log on to your Terminal Server using an account with Administrative rights.
4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
5. Click Add/Remove Programs.
6. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the Install button.
7. Click Next.
8. There you see the Command line for installation program box. You can run Setup.exe, adding the TRANSFORMS= option to the command line to specify the location of the MST file. What you type on the command line depends upon whether or not you have installed the SR-1 update to Office 2000. Refer to the following list for your particular version.

   For Microsoft Office 2000 Developer, original release (non-SR-1):

   "Path to MOD CD\odetools\v9\accessRT\setup.exe" TRANSFORMS=
   "c:\program files\orktools\toolbox\tools\terminal server tools
   \termsrvr_art.mst"
   								

   For Microsoft Office 2000 Developer SR-1:

   "Path to MOD CD\accessRT\full\setup.exe" TRANSFORMS=
   "c:\program files\orktools\toolbox\tools\terminal server tools
   \termsrvr_art.mst"
   								

   – or –

   "Path to MOD CD\accessRT\min\setup.exe" TRANSFORMS=
   "c:\program files\orktools\toolbox\tools\terminal server tools
   \termsrvr_art.mst"
   								

   For distributed custom applications:

   "Path to CD\Runtime\Setup.exe" TRANSFORMS="c:\program files
   \orktools\toolbox\tools\terminal server tools\termsrvr_art.mst"
   								

9. Click Next.
10. On the Change User Option page, you are presented with two installation choices. Select All users begin with common application settings, and then click Next
11. This starts the typical Access 2000 Runtime Setup. Enter your install information, and click Next until you see the Ready to Install page.
12. Click Install Now.
13. When Setup is finished, you are asked to restart the server.

At this point you can install your Access solution.

Option 2 - Install the Full Version of Access

The Access 2000 Retail version can be installed on Terminal Server by using a special transform, Termsrvr.mst. However, it must be a separate installation because its Setup cannot be incorporated into your package. You can download the Office Resource Kit core tool set (ORKTools.exe), which contains Termsrvr.mst, from the following Microsoft Web site: After you finish downloading ORKTools.exe, double-click it to install the Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit Tools and Utilities. Then browse to the folder that you installed the Tools and Utilities into ( by default, this is C:\Program Files\ORKTools). Open the ToolBox\Tools\Terminal Server Tools folder to find Termsrvr.mst.

You can use this transform to install Access from either Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Setup or from the Access 2000 Retail version Setup. This transform cannot be used with the Access Run-Time version Setup.

After you have Access installed on the Terminal Server, you can install your Access solution.

To install the Access Retail version on a Terminal Server, follow these steps.

1. Log on to your Terminal Server using an account with Administrative rights.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the Install button.
5. Click Next.
6. In the Command line for installation program box, type the following:

   <path to setup>\setup.exe transforms=<path to the transform>\TERMSRVR.MST
   							

   where <path to setup> is the network share or CD where the Office 2000 Premium Setup or the Access 2000 Retail version Setup program is located, and <path to the transform> is the folder where Termsrvr.mst is located.
   
   
7. Click Next.
8. On the Change User Option page, you are presented two installation choices. Select All users begin with common application settings, and then click Next
9. This starts the typical Access 2000 or Office 2000 Setup. Enter your install information, and click Next until you see the Ready to Install page.
10. If you are running Office 2000 Setup and you only want users to have Access 2000, or if you are running the Access 2000 Setup and you want to select what features you want to install, continue with the following steps. Otherwise, on the Ready to Install page, click Install Now.
11. If you want to customize your Setup, on the Ready to Install page, click Customize.
12. Click Next twice until you see the Selecting Features page. Select the components that you want to install. For instance, if you are using the Office 2000 Premium installation, you may want to install only Access. In that case, change the other products to Not Available. You may also select what features of Access you want to install.
13. After you are finished selecting Office features, click Install Now.
    
    When Setup is finished, you are asked to restart the server.

At this point you can install your Access solution.

Terminal Server Considerations

Windows Installer, used to set up and configure programs and components of Office, employees a transform file that allows a network administrator to designate options and features that will be installed. Because the Terminal Server environment is different than the usual network environment, Microsoft has supplied a transform file to specifically handle the Terminal Server installation. If you try to use a customized transform not designated for use with Terminal Server, the program will not be installed.

The transform file for Office is named TermSrvr.mst and is available with the Office Resource Kit (ORK). Although Termsrvr.mst can be customized to include options and features that you want to make available to Terminal Server client users, modification of the TermSrvr.mst is not supported by Microsoft.
