Audio is unavailable in Office Communicator 2007 R2 after you exit from a RDP session in which the audio is redirected to a remote computer

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer (Computer A) that is running Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 on Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
  • You log on to Computer A from a remote computer (Computer B) by using a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection. You set the RDP connection to redirect the sound to Computer B.
  • You close the RDP connection without logging off from Computer A in the RDP connection.
  • You log on to Computer A locally.
In this scenario, the audio is unavailable in Office Communicator 2007 R2 on Computer A.

RESOLUTION

To fix this problem, install the following cumulative update on Computer A:  
2291453 Description of the cumulative update package for Communicator 2007 R2: November 2010
To fix this problem, you must also apply another hotfix on computer A. This hotfix is mentioned in KB 2405042. However, to obtain this hotfix, you must have an extended support contract for Windows XP.
