"Warning: The Restore Destination Device..." Error Message During Restore

When you are restoring a backup created with the Backup tool, you may receive the following error message: If you continue restoring, some files are skipped during the restore process.

This behavior can occur if the files that you are attempting to restore have attributes that require the NTFS file system, but the drive to which you are restoring is not formatted as NTFS.

This may also occur if files have reparse points ($Symbolic_link) associated with them, but the required filter driver is not started. Remote Storage and Remote Installation Server (RIS) SIS volumes use Reparse points on data files. If the backup contains these types of files, but the associated service is not currently running, you receive the warning message.

To resolve this issue, make sure that the device to which you are restoring uses NTFS.

This behavior is by design.

Some files, such as files that are encrypted with the Encrypting File System (EFS), can exist only on partitions that are formatted with the NTFS file system. If you attempt to restore encrypted files to a partition that does not use NTFS, you receive the error message.
