This article was previously published under Q245061 SYMPTOMS
Proxy Server 2.0 performance counters work in Windows 2000, but Windows 2000 uses a different file format than Windows NT 4.0 to save Performance Monitor views. As a result, you cannot save the Performance Monitor settings for the Proxy Server 2.0 Start menu shortcut.
CAUSE
When you run Windows 2000, Performance Monitor runs in a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) window and view settings are saved as a Microsoft Common Console Document (.msc) file. When you run Windows NT 4.0, Performance Monitor runs as a stand-alone program and views are saved with a file extension indicating the view type. For example, a Performance Monitor Chart view is saved as a .pmc file, and a Log view is saved as a .pml file.
Because the Proxy Server 2.0 Start menu shortcut points to a .pmc file, the shortcut starts Windows 2000 Performance Monitor, but you are unable to save any changes that are made to the view. The Save option on the Console menu is inactive, but you can use the Save As option. This option saves the view as a new .msc file, but does not change the Start menu shortcut. WORKAROUND
To create the default Proxy Server 2.0 Performance Monitor Chart view and save it to the Start menu, use the following steps:
