Administrative Shares Do Not Appear on Server

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view the administrative shares (for example, c$, d$, admin$, and IPC$) from a computer running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000, the shares may not be displayed. When you restart the computer, you may still not be able to view the shares.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks values in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters key are set to 0 (zero).

To resolve this issue, configure the AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks registry values to use the value data 1 (one):

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32), and then locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
  2. Configure the AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks values to 1 (one).
  3. Quit Registry Editor.
  4. Restart the computer to make the shares active.
