SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You use extended characters to set a password for a mailbox in an Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment. For example, you set a password with à, é, and ù characters.
You access the mailbox by using a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) client.

In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'account_name', Server: 'Server_Name', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Protocol error. 17', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2602324 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2602324/ ) Description of Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3

Note After you install this update rollup, you can configure the PasswordCodePage property to choose whether extended characters are supported in passwords when you use POP3 or IMAP4. To do this, follow these steps:

On the Client Access server, go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\PopImap.
Note Where C:\ is the directory in which you installed Exchange Server 2007.
Use any text editor, such as Notepad, to open the Microsoft.Exchange.Pop3.exe.Config file or the Microsoft.Exchange.Imap4.exe.Config file.
Configure the PasswordCodePage property.
Restart the Microsoft Exchange POP3 or IMAP4 service.
