BUG: Windows Installer Fails When Environment Variables Are Improperly Set

SYMPTOMS

When you run a Windows Installer-based installation, the Windows Installer may fail and return this internal error message:
Server returned unexpected error 2755 attempting to install package.

CAUSE

This can happen when a program adds an empty environment variable during the installation of the product. An example of an empty environment variable is "MYVARIABLE=".

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the empty environment variable from the environment settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

On Windows 95 and Windows 98, environment variables are found in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. On Windows NT and Windows 2000, you can view the environment variables by typing set from a command prompt.
