Errors with certain software in Windows 7 when burning CDs or DVDs containing files larger than 128KB

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are using a CD/DVD burning program in Windows 7.
  • This program uses the legacy IMAPI version 1 application programming interface to write data to the CD or DVD.
  • This program also uses the OLE Structured Storage application programming interface.

In this scenario, you may experience an error when trying to burn a CD/DVD image which contains files larger than 128KB.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs in Windows 7 due to a design change intended to improve the reliability of CD/DVD burning.

RESOLUTION

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services
  3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key. Type imapi and then press ENTER.
  4. Select imapi, click New on the Edit menu, and click QWORD (64-bit) Value.
  5. For the name of the value, type MinNonstashedItemSize. Leave the value data at the default of 0.
  6. Click New on the Edit menu, and click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  7. For the name of the value, type MaxTrackedNonstashedItemCount. Leave the value data at the default of 0.
