SYMPTOMS

On Windows 7-based computers, when you pin a program to the taskbar, and then you update or upgrade that program, the icon that is pinned may be missing or may be displayed incorrectly.

CAUSE

When you update or upgrade programs, the pinned icons that are associated with those programs can lose their link associations if there are issues with the update or with the upgrade process. Windows 7 runs a maintenance task and checks the system for broken shortcuts. If more than four broken shortcuts are found, Windows automatically deletes those broken shortcuts. If Windows does not delete the broken shortcuts, the remaining icons may be displayed incorrectly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps, as appropriate for your situation.

Icons are displayed incorrectly on the taskbar:

If a pinned program’s icon is not displayed correctly in the taskbar, follow these steps to remove the incorrect icon and re-pin the program to the taskbar:
  1. Right-click the incorrect icon in the taskbar.
  2. Click Yes when you are prompted, and then delete the icon from the taskbar.
  3. Click Start, and then locate the program.
  4. Right-click the program's icon, and then click Pin to taskbar.
Icons are missing from the taskbar:

Program is running: To re-pin the program to taskbar if the program is running, and the program icon is displayed in the taskbar, right-click the program’s icon on the taskbar, and then select Pin this program to taskbar.

Program is not running: To re-pin the program to the taskbar if the program is not running, and the program icon is not in the taskbar, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and locate the program.
  2. Right-click the program’s icon, and then click Pin to taskbar.
