Symptoms

After you install or uninstall update KB 975929 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, some text on the logon screen may not be displayed correctly. For example, part of the welcome message may be clipped.

Cause

The font that is used for text in the logon screen UI is the Meiryo UI font. KB 975929 updates the registry entries for Meiryo UI. This action causes the Microsoft Graphics Device Interface (GDI) to delay the loading of the font at the logon phase of Windows Vista and of Windows Server 2008.

Fix it for me

To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Then click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in this wizard.





Note This wizard may be in English only; however, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

Let me fix it myself

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be resolved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem yourself, add a string value that is named PreloadFontFile and that has a string value of "meiryo.ttc" to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

To add this string value, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then double-click regedit in the Programs list.

  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.

  4. Type PreloadFontFile for the name of the string value, and then press Enter.

  5. Right-click PreloadFontFile, and then click Modify.

  6. In the Value data box, type meiryo.ttc, and then click OK.

  7. If you are running an x64-based or IA-64-based computer, repeat steps 3 through 6 for the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  8. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Note This solution can affect the system restart performance if there are a many fonts that are installed on the system.
