The English (U.S.) version of Word 2000 comes with proofing tools for English, Spanish, and French. When you open a document or type text, Microsoft Word can automatically detect the language of the text and use the appropriate spelling and grammar dictionaries, punctuation rules, and sorting conventions for that language.

Also, when you copy text in one of these languages into your document or check spelling in a document that contains text in more than one of these languages, Word can use the spelling dictionaries installed for each language. If you have the Microsoft Proofing Tools Kit, you can perform these tasks in many more languages.

Follow these steps to install the Spanish or French Proofing Tools.

Turn On the Language You Want

1.	Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
2.	On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and click Microsoft Language Settings.
3.	In the Show controls and enable editing for box, select the check box next to the language you want to turn on; for example, Spanish or French.
4.	Click OK.

Install the Proofing Tools

1.	On the Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
2.	Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3.	Do one of the following: • Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows NT: On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office 2000 (or Microsoft Word 2000), and then click Add/Remove. -or- • Microsoft Windows 2000: In the Currently installed programs list, click to select Microsoft Office 2000 (or Microsoft Word 2000), and then click Change.
4.	In Maintenance Mode Setup, click Add or Remove Features. NOTE: To expand, click the plus sign to the left of an item.
5.	Click to expand Office Tools.
6.	Click Proofing Tools (French) or Proofing Tools (Spanish), or both, and select Run from My Computer.
7.	Click Update Now.

Word can automatically detect the language you are using, so when you type in a different language, Word flags the text in the appropriate language. This is useful for documents that contain mixed languages.

To have Word detect your language automatically, do the following:

1.	Start Microsoft Word 2000. On the Tools menu, point to Language and then click Set Language.
2.	Select the Detect language automatically check box.
3.	Click OK.
