SYMPTOMS

When you are typing in Word 2000, one of the following may occur:
  • The CAPS LOCK key stops responding completely.
  • The CAPS LOCK key still works, but the CAPS LOCK light on the keyboard no longer reflects the current CAPS LOCK status.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are both true:
  • A French keyboard driver is installed as the default.
  • More than one document is currently open in Word.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Add the French keyboard driver in Control Panel, and set it as the default.
  2. Start Word 2000 and open a document that contains French text.
  3. Open a new document, so that two documents are open in Word.
  4. On the Window menu, click Arrange All.
  5. Place the insertion point in the document that has French text in it.
  6. Press CAPS LOCK. Note that the CAPS LOCK light on the keyboard is switched on.
  7. Type several paragraphs of text with CAPS LOCK on.
  8. Press SHIFT to turn CAPS LOCK off.
  9. Type some more text.
  10. Press CAPS LOCK again.
  11. Type some more text.
  12. Repeat steps 6 through 11 several times.

    Result: The CAPS LOCK key stops functioning correctly.
