XL2000: Crash When Closing Excel After Closing Workbook with Circular References

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to close Microsoft Excel after closing a workbook with circular references, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows 95/98

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 0167:303c4b08

Windows NT

The instruction at "0x302ca789" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be read.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You calculate a workbook right before closing it.

    -and-
  • You close the workbook right before attempting to quit Excel.

    -and-
  • The workbook contains multiple circular references.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
