PUB2000 Error Message: Publisher Can't Check the Spelling in This Document

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Publisher 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Publisher can't check the spelling in this document.

Publisher cannot install the necessary files due to Windows installer error 6.

The handle is invalid.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using Publisher 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer and you do not belong to a group that has Full Control permissions for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
