Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fix release

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or SQL 2008 on a computer.

  • You create a partitioned table that contains a nonclustered index that is unaligned.

  • You run the ALTER PARTITION FUNCTION statement to split or merge a partition range for the partitioned table.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message periodically:

Msg 2601, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Cannot insert duplicate key row in object <objectname> with unique index <uniqueindexname>.

Cause

This issue occurs because an error is triggered in the query optimizer when a partition range is split.

When the runtime plan deletes and inserts some rows from the affected partition range into a new partition range, a unique key violation occurs.
