INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 R2 issues that are resolved in the hotfix rollup package that was released on February 8, 2011.

List of issues that are resolved

Issue 1

Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) Tip alerts are not displayed in the SCVMM Admin Console if the alert resolution state is set to a value other than 0 in System Center Operations Manager 2007.

Issue 2

If a network adapter for a Hyper-V host uses teaming software, Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) may incorrectly bind the Virtual Switch to the host network adapter.

Issue 3

A Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) migration to a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) volume fails if the cluster node that owns the volume has insufficient disk space on the system volume. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Error 2606
Unable to perform the job because one or more of the selected objects are locked by another job.

Issue 4

A Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) migration from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Error 416
Agent installation timed out while waiting on service VMMAgentInstaller on servername.domain.com.

Notes

  • servername is a placeholder for the name of a server.

  • domain.com is a placeholder for the name of the domain that the server joins.

Issue 5

The network migration of a highly available virtual machine to a different cluster fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Error (12711)
VMM cannot complete the WMI operation on server servername.domain.com because of error: [MSCluster_ResourceGroup.Name="4168e895-2831-32cf-b4d8-352ac13e28c9"] The cluster group could not be found.
(The cluster group could not be found (0x1395))

Notes

  • servername is a placeholder for the name of a server.

  • domain.com is a placeholder for the name of the domain that the server joins.

How to obtain this SCVMM 2008 R2 hotfix rollup package

This hotfix rollup package is available on Microsoft Update.

To obtain this update from Microsoft Update, follow these steps on a computer that is running SCVMM 2008 R2:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Update.

  3. In the Windows Update window, click Check Online for updates from Microsoft Update.

  4. Click important updates are available.

  5. Select Update for System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (KB2492980), and then click OK.

  6. Click Install updates.

Note If the Virtual Machine Manager or Virtual Machine Manager Agent service is running when you install this hotfix rollup package, you have to restart the computer.

How to update the SCVMM agent on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts

Note: The VMM agent on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts need to be updated if the previous rollup (2308590) was not installed when this rollup is installed. The hosts will have a status of Needs Attention if the agent has not been updated.

To update the SCVMM agent on multiple hosts, follow these steps:

  1. Open the SCVMM Administrator Console window.

  2. Click Administration, and then click Managed Computers.

  3. Select the hosts that you want to update, and then click Update Agent.

  4. Enter your user account credentials, and then click OK.

Note The Microsoft Update Catalog has different versions of the hotfix rollup package. These different versions have the EVAL, OEM, RETAIL, and WORKGRP labels. Download the appropriate version for your installation.

To install this hotfix rollup package, follow these steps:

  1. Extract the VmmServer64Update-RETAIL.cab file to a temporary directory.

    Note The name of the package may vary. For example, the name may contain EVAL, OEM, RETAIL, and WORKGRP. Extract the appropriate version for your installation.

  2. Open an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER to install the update:

    msiexec /update PackageName.msp BOOTSTRAPPED=1
    NotePackageName is a placeholder for the name of the package that is the appropriate version for your installation. For example, the name of the package might be vmmServer64Update-RETAIL.

  3. After the hotfix rollup package is installed, update the VMM agent on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts if the previous rollup (2308590) was not installed when this rollup is installed.

To apply this hotfix rollup package, you must have Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 R2 installed.

Restart requirement

If the Virtual Machine Manager or Virtual Machine Manager Agent service is running when you install this hotfix rollup package, you have to restart the computer.

Update replacement information

This hotfix rollup package replaces the hotfix rollup package 2308590.
