Outlook features disabled when installed with Home and Student

SYMPTOMS

After installing Outlook 2010 Standalone and Office 2010 Home and Student, you are unable to use some features in Outlook. For example, themes, table formatting, proofing tools and Word Art are not available. The Preview Attachments feature is also disabled.

CAUSE

You installed Office 2010 Home and Student as Click-to-Run. Outlook Standalone cannot display the Word features when used with Click-to-Run.

RESOLUTION

In order for Outlook 2010 Standalone to enable all features, Office 2010 Home and Student must be installed using the standard MSI installation.

If Office 2010 Click-to-Run does not meet your needs, uninstall it. Then, install Office 2010 standard MSI version. To do this, follow the steps below:

Uninstall the Click-to-Run version of Office 2010

For Windows XP
  1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Select the Office Click-to-Run application from the list, and then click Remove.
For Windows Vista and Windows 7
  1. Click Start, type programs and features in the Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Select the Office Click-to-Run application from the list, and then click Remove.
Install Office 2010 using the MSI installation option

  1. Visit the site where you purchased Office 2010, and sign in with the same Live ID that you used when you first purchased Office 2010.
  2. Click the My Account link at the top of the home page to access your Office downloads.
  3. Click the Download button for the suite that you purchased, and then click the Advanced Options link under the Download Now button.
  4. Select a version of Office 2010 that is not listed as a Click-to-Run application.

Even after you install Home and Student MSI, the Themes feature still remains unavailable. This is a known problem, and there is no workaround. If you must have this feature, please obtain Office 2010 Home and Business or any other SKU that includes Outlook together with Word.
