SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Home Server 2011 Connector software to Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise, you may receive the following error message: 
 
The Windows Home Server 2011 Connector has encountered an unexpected error. Click Close to undo most of the changes that are made to this computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Windows Media Center services are set to ‘Disabled’.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, manually start the Windows Media Center Services before you install Windows Home Server Connector software. To do this, follow these steps:

Note: This information applies to Windows Vista and Windows 7.

  1. Click the Start button and type services.msc in the Search box and then click Services in the Programs list above. 
  2. In the Services (Local) list, right-click Windows Media Center Receiver Service, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Startup type drop-down list select the Manual option, and then click OK.

    Repeat these steps with the following service:
    Windows Media Center Scheduler Service
  4. Re-install the Windows Home Server 2011 Connector software and follow the instructions that appear on the screen to finish installing.
