This article was previously published under Q252304 SYMPTOMSWhen you try to start Microsoft Outlook on a computer that is running Windows XP, you may receive one of the following error messages, depending on the version of Outlook that you are running. After you receive the error message, Outlook does not start. Microsoft Outlook 2010: Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you view the error report contents, you see error signature information similar to the following: AppName: Outlook.exe Microsoft Office Outlook 2007:AppVer: 14.0.4760.1000 AppVer: 14.0.4760.1000 ModName: Kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00012aeb Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The information store could not be opened. Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. Unable to open the Outlook window. No profile has been created. The list of Profiles cannot be loaded. An unexpected error has occurred. CAUSEThis issue may occur on a computer that is running Windows XP if the Outlook.exe file was configured to open by using the Windows program compatibility mode setting. When you set compatibility for Outlook to Windows 95 or to Windows 98/Windows Millennium Edition, Outlook displays this error message. This occurs because the location of the Outlook Profile information in the registry is different on a Windows XP-based computer than it is on a computer that is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition.
