WD2000: Microsoft Office 2000 Web Archive Add-on Available

This article describes what the Microsoft Office 2000 Web Archive Add-on is and how to use it.

The Microsoft Office 2000 Web Archive Add-on allows you to save a Web page as a single file, including all of the graphics on the page, by using the MIME HTML Internet standard. This is especially useful if you save your Microsoft Office 2000 documents as Web pages, because most of the Microsoft Office 2000 programs save Web pages as multiple files.

Packing your Microsoft Office 2000 documents with the Web archive add-on helps to avoid errors if you want to send the Web page to someone else. By using Web archive, you can easily send the Web page as one file through e-mail, or you can save the Web page for offline viewing. You can also unpack a Web archive if you need to restore it to its original state.

NOTE: To use the Web archive add-on--to archive, view, or restore archived Web pages--you must install Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later and Microsoft Outlook Express. Although you do not need to use Outlook Express to send archive files by e-mail, Outlook Express must be installed.

How to Use the Microsoft Office 2000 Web Archive Add-on

1. Save your Word document as a Web page. For more information about saving your Word document as a Web page, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type save as Web page in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
   
2. After you save your Microsoft Word 2000 document as a Web page and you are ready to archive it, locate the HTM/HTML file for the Web page, and then click it.
   
   NOTE: You can do this in the Open dialog box (on the File menu in Word, click Open), or you can select it in Windows Explorer (right-click the Windows Start menu, and then click Explore).
3. Right-click the selected Web page, and then select Save as Web Archive on the shortcut menu that appears.
   
   NOTE: This creates a file called <filename> (web archive).
