Portable Document Format Files Not Opened in Internet Explorer When Parameter List Exceeds 46 Characters

SYMPTOMS

When you query a database on a Web server from an .asp file, a Portable Document Format (.pdf) file is not opened in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.01 when the parameter list exceeds 46 characters.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs under the following conditions:
  • The parameter(s) given in the URL exceed a length of 46 characters.
  • The .pdf files are accessed with HTTP on a Web server. This does not occur if you are using the file:// protocol.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 2.
