DNS Name Resolution May Not Work for the FTP GUID

Windows 2000 Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs) are available for querying specific Domain Name System (DNS) types. With some GUIDs, including the FTP GUID, host name resolution may not succeed.

When the GUID translation does not succeed, the WSALookupServiceX call does not succeed and generates a "WSATYPE_NOT_FOUND" error message. Note that this problem does not occur if other programs that do not use GUIDs (for example, Ping) happen to touch the host in question before this call is made.

This problem occurs because the GUID is not translated into the correct DNS type. In the case of the FTP GUID, it is translated to DNS_TYPE_ZERO.
