Summary

Users using Office 2003 may be unable to create new documents from SharePoint 2010 document libraries. This occurs if:

  • The SharePoint 2010 Document library was created using the default selection of "Word template" and the user clicks on the New button in the document library and chooses "Document". The library uses a .DOTX file as the template for the document content type in the document library.
  • The SharePoint 2010 Document library is using content types that use templates that are .DOTX files. It works fine if the templates are .DOCX files.

Office 2003 can use the Office Compatibility Pack to open files from newer versions of Office; however, the Compatibility Pack does not open .DOTX files, but it does open .DOCX files.

The workarounds are:

  • Change the content type in the 2010 document library to make use of an template which can be read by Office 2003, such as .DOC, .DOT
  • Change the content type in the 2010 document libraryto make use of a template which can be read by Office 2003 with the Compatibility Pack installed, such as .DOCX (but not .DOTX)
  • Create the document library and choose the template "Microsoft Word 97-2003 document"
  • Use a compatible version of Office client; Office 2010 or Office 2007.
