Access Violation in Wininet.dll When You Use a SOCKS Proxy That Is Configured by a .pac File

SYMPTOMS

When you use the SOCKS protocol to connect to an Internet site while you are using an automatic configuration script (.pac) file, you may receive an error message that indicates an access violation has occurred in the Wininet.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use an automatic configuration script (.pac) file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 1.
