Using the Windows Phone Support Tool on errors 80180080, 800705B4, 80180048 or C101002E when updating your phone

SYMPTOMS


When you try to update your Windows Phone from OS version 7.0.7004.0 or 7.0.7008.0, you receive an error code with one of the following error messages:

RESOLUTION

IMPORTANT Do not use the Windows Phone Support Tool if your OS version is 7.0.7390.0 or higher. Only use the tool if you receive one of the error messages listed in the Symptoms section.

To find out which version you have: On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings > About > More info.

The Windows Phone Support Tool fixes the problems that prevent your Windows Phone from updating successfully.

IMPORTANT Do not use the Windows Phone Support Tool unless you have received one of the error messages listed in the Symptoms section.

NoteZune software version 4.8 or later is required for the latest version of the Windows Phone Support Tool.
The following steps show how to download the Windows Support Tool and use it to resolve your installation issues.
  1. Unplug the USB cable from the phone.
  2. Download the Windows Phone Support Tool from the Microsoft Download Center. If you have a 32-bit system, download the WPSupportToolv2-x86.msi (http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/6/6/666ED30F-15E4-4287-8E73-CE08CCE07AAB/WPSupportToolv2-x86.msi) package. If you have a 64-bit system, download the WPSupportToolv2-amd64.msi (http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/6/6/666ED30F-15E4-4287-8E73-CE08CCE07AAB/WPSupportToolv2-amd64.msi) package.

  3. Complete the steps to install the Windows Phone Support Tool.
  4. When you're finished, click Start, point to All Programs, and then from the list of programs, click Windows Phone Support Tool.
  5. Restart your phone: Press and hold the Power button

    until you see Slide down to power off, then flick down. After it’s off, press

    to turn on your phone again.
  6. As soon as the phone turns on, press and hold the Camera button

    until the connect-to-PC screen appears (shown at the end of this step). It may take a few moments for this to appear. As soon as the screen appears, release the Camera button

    Note The camera button is located on the side of your phone.

  7. Reconnect your phone by using the USB cable.
  8. Your phone will be detected by your computer and the Zune software may automatically start. This process frequently takes several minutes.
    Important If the Zune software does start, close it.
  9. In the Windows Phone Support Tool, click the Recover button.

  10. If the Windows Phone Support Tool finds a problem between the version of the tool and the version of the Zune software on your computer, you may receive an error. Update to the latest version of the Zune software and the latest version of the Windows Phone Support Tool and try again.
  11. The Windows Phone Support Tool will install an update that fixes the problem and restarts your phone. If your phone is locked, enter your password when prompted.
  12. When you see "The device has been updated" text, located at the bottom of the screen, close the Windows Phone Support Tool and disconnect your phone.

  13. Reconnect your phone to the computer to install the latest phone update by using the Zune software. To update your phone on the Zune software, click Settings, click Phone, and then click Update.
