Outlook: Unable to save modified permissions to Outlook folder

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to change folder permissions in Outlook the following error is received: “The modified permissions could not be saved.”

CAUSE

The Access Control List (ACL) of the given folder has become corrupted and needs to be re-written.

To resolve this problem grant, apply and then remove Delegate access. This action forces a re-write of the Access Control Lists (ACL) at the mailbox level, which propagates to the folders.

To grant, apply, and then remove Delegate access (Outlook 2003/2007):

In the Microsoft Outlook client, click Tools, click Options, and then click Delegates.
Click Add, and then click any user in the global address list field.
In the Permissions page, click OK, click Apply, and then click OK again.
Click Tools, click Options, click Delegates, and then remove the user that you added in step 2.

To grant, apply, and then remove Delegate access (Outlook 2010):

Select the File tab, click Account Settings, and then click Delegate Access.
Click Add, and then click any user in the global address list field.
In the Permissions page, click OK, click Apply, and then click OK again.
Select the File tab, click Account Settings, click Delegate Access, and then remove the user that you added in step 2.
