SYMPTOMS

Starting with Windows 2000 Server, Macintosh clients that are running the AppleShare client version 3.7 or later can connect to Services for Macintosh (SFM) volumes over Apple File Protocol/Internet Protocol (AFP/IP). When you are using AFP/IP for network connectivity between a Windows 2000-based server and Macintosh clients, the Windows 2000-based server that is running SFM does not appear in the Macintosh Chooser.

CAUSE

Using AFP/IP instead of AppleTalk eliminates the broadcast traffic associated with AppleTalk, which cuts down on network traffic. However, the ability to advertise AppleTalk resources in the Chooser relies upon the broadcast nature of the AppleTalk protocol, and does not function over AFP/IP. AppleTalk clients are unable to advertise themselves or their resources over AFP/IP.
