Hewlett-Packard T-10 Server Hangs on Boot

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 2000 on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) T-10 server, the server may stop responding (hang) at startup.

CAUSE

Windows is not turning off write combining on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

To use the hotfix:
  1. Restart the computer in Safe mode.
  2. Disable write combining:
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Add the following key in the registry:
      HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\DisableUSWC
      Note that a value is not required for this key.

    3. Restart the computer.
  3. Install the hotfix.
  4. Remove the DisableUSWC key from the registry.
