Site Server Search SP3 Puts Temp Files in System32 Folder

SYMPTOMS

Site Server Search with Service Pack (SP) 3 places temporary files created during a crawl into the System32 folder, and not in the Temp folder that is specified in the Site Server Search Management Console, or in the Temp folder specified by the TEMP environment variable. Also, Search does not clean up the files.

CAUSE

This problem was introduced in SP3. It does not occur with SP2. During a crawl, Search generates temp files. The temp file filename generation code, however, ignores the temp directory settings, and places the files in the wrong folder. During cleanup, Search cleans up the correct Temp folder, thus leaving the files that were placed in the wrong folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Site Server version 3.0. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Site Server 3.0. This problem was first corrected in Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 4.
