SYMPTOMS

After you install Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3 (SP3) on a computer, the EdgeTransport.exe process on the server crashes occasionally. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Source: MSExchange Common
Category: General

Event ID: 4999
Description:
Watson report about to be sent to dw20.exe for process id: <Process ID>, with parameters: E12N, <Build Type>, <Version Number>, edgetransport.exe, exrpc32.dll, <XXXX>, c0000005, <XXXX>, <Version Number>. ErrorReportingEnabled: False

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Exrpc32.dll does not verify a NULL buffer before it accesses the buffer when the message is delivered. Therefore, an access violation occurs in the EdgeTransport.exe process.
