Recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Clusters

SUMMARY

This article documents recommended hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Clusters. Applying these fixes can improve the reliability of your high avialability solution.  

Note We recommend you evaluate each fix to determine whether it applies to your environment. If you determine that Failover Clusters in your environment may be affected by the problem(s) that a fix addresses, install the fix on each cluster node using the procedures described in KB174799 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174799)

We recommend that you install one or more of the following Windows Server 2008 R2 post-SP1 hotfixes, depending on your environment: 

General hotfixes
  • To avoid false Storage Validation test errors or warnings in a Failover Cluster with greater than 2 nodes, we recommend you install the following fix:
2531907 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2531907) Validate SCSI Device Vital Product Data (VPD) test fails after you install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 
  • To avoid problems affecting cluster operation when the network is unreliable, we recommend that you install the following fixes:

2550886 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2550886) A transient communication failure causes a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster to stop working

2524478 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524478) The network location profile changes from "Domain" to "Public" in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

  • To avoid slow performance of the cluster and possible system crashes, we recommend you install the following fix:
2520235 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2520235) "0x0000009E" Stop error when you add an extra storage disk to a failover cluster in Windows Server 2008 R2

Note: We recommend you install the following fixes, depending on the Failover Cluster configuration. You do not have to install these fixes if you are not running these resources in a Failover Cluster.
  • For Hyper-V Failover Clusters using Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV):
2494162 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2494162)  The Cluster service stops unexpectedly on a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster node when you perform multiple backup operations in parallel on a cluster shared volume.
