Outlook for Mac 2011 preferences are greyed out or not visible

Symptoms

When you install Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1, some Outlook 2011 preference items are greyed out, inaccessible, or not visible.

For example, if you click Preferences on the Outlook menu and then click General under Personal Settings the page or the options on the page may be greyed out, or not visible.

Cause

This issue can occur when the Outlook preference file is missing or damaged.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Step 1: Quit all Microsoft Office applications

  1. On the Apple menu, click Force Quit.
  2. Select an Office application in the "Force Quit Applications" window.

  3. Click Force Quit.
4. Repeat the previous steps until you quit all active applications.

WARNING When an application is force quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved.

Step 2: Remove com.microsoft.outlook.plist

  1. On the Go menu, click Home.
  2. Open Library.
    Note The Library folder is hidden in MAC OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

  3. Open Preferences.
  4. Drag com.microsoft.outlook.plist to the desktop.
  5. Start Outlook to see whether the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues to occur, go to the next step.

Step 3: Remove com.microsoft.outlook.xxx.plist files

  1. On the Go menu, click Home.
  2. Open Library.
    Note The Library folder is hidden in MAC OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

  3. Open Preferences.
  4. Drag all files that use this name structure to the desktop:
    • com.microsoft.outlook.xxx.plist (where xxx is a placeholder for a name)
      Example file: com.microsoft.outlook.database_daemon.plist
  5. Start Outlook to see whether the issue is resolved.
