Article ID: 255160 - Last Review: October 25, 2007 - Revision: 8.2 SMTP messages that are sent from the Lotus Notes SMTPMTA to Exchange 2000 and to Exchange 2003 append @NotesDomain to the sender's addressThis article was previously published under Q255160 SYMPTOMS When an SMTP message that is routed through the Lotus Notes
SMTP message transfer agent (SMTPMTA) to the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes
and then to Microsoft
Exchange 2000
Server, "@NotesDomain"
is appended to the sender's SMTP address. For example, if
a sender's address
is someone@example.com, the address
will appear in an Exchange client as someone@example.com@NotesDomain.
This behavior causes all replies to these messages to be sent back to the
Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes instead of to an Exchange SMTP route. CAUSE This behavior was designed to enable replies to downstream
Lotus Notes domains. There is no sender validation in the LSMEXIN process to
distinguish between a downstream Notes domain and a message from the
SMTPMTA. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, follow these steps:

Note
Make sure that the SMTP address of the Exchange user is synced to the
Internet Address field of the person document that
is created
by the Dirsync
process in Exchange
Connector for Lotus Notes.
To do this, modify the following mapping tables:
STATUSThis problem occurs only if Lotus Notes is configured as the
inbound SMTP mail gateway from the Internet. This is not a supported
configuration of the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes before the
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 post-Service Pack 2 Web Release. MORE INFORMATIONAfter you upgrade to the latest Exchange Server 2003
post-Service Pack 2 Web Release, the Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes now
supports an IBM Notes Domino server as the inbound SMTP gateway during the
migration process to Exchange Server. For a longer-term solution, we recommend
that you point the inbound SMTP gateway to Exchange Server. You have to sync SMTP addresses from Exchange to Notes to the Internet Address field of the Person document when Domino is the SMTP gateway. This is because the Domino SMTP MTA uses the Internet Address field to resolve the user’s SMTP address. If the Internet Address field is not populated, you see the address and display name change, and you experience the behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. For more information about how to migrate from IBM Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange Server, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/interopmigration/bb403105.aspx
