SYMPTOMS

When you compose a new message in Outlook, you may be unable to change the font style, font size, or font color.

CAUSE

This may occur if Outlook is configured to send messages in Plain Text format. Plain Text does not include any character formatting options.

RESOLUTION

To change the format of text characters when you compose a new message, you can use either Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format or HTML format.

To change the default format of your new messages:
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  3. In the Send in this message format box, click either HTML or Microsoft Outlook Rich Text, and then click OK.
You will now be able to change the font style, font size, and font color when you compose new messages.
