This document covers support for the following clients in virtualized environments:

Microsoft Lync 2010
Microsoft Lync 2010 Group Chat

The following clients are not supported in virtualized environments:

Microsoft Lync 2010 Attendee
Microsoft Lync 2010 Attendant Console
Microsoft Lync Web App

Note This document does not cover virtualization support for Microsoft Lync Server 2010.

Virtualization Architectures

Full desktop remoting - In this mode, the entire desktop is remotely accessed by using either session virtualization or virtual desktop infrastructure(VDI).

Application remoting - In this mode, a given application or a set of applications run on a remote server and can be accessed without remoting the entire desktop.

Application streaming - In this mode, an application is virtualized by sequencing the application and deploying the sequenced version in the data center in such a way that users can access and run the application on a local device without installing the application.

Application streaming - Application streaming was verified on Microsoft products. For details, see the “Vendor support” section earlier in this article.

Full desktop remoting with desk phone paired by using USBR - Audio is supported only in a VDI environment. Audio is not supported in a session-based desktop delivery environment, such as Microsoft RDS.

Online meetings with application remoting or full desktop remoting - Communication modes for online meetings are limited by peer-to-peer communication modes that are supported for the specified architecture. For example, if audio is not supported on the specified architecture. Audio will not work in online meetings.

Online meetings with application streaming - Joining online meetings from Microsoft Outlook meeting reminders or meeting invitations is not supported.

Feature deployment support

Full desktop remoting

Audio is supported only through pairing of desk phones that are running Lync 2010 Phone Edition with USB Redirection.
Video is not supported in this architecture.
Recording is not supported in this architecture.

Application remoting

Audio is not supported.
Video is not supported.
Recording is not supported.

Application streaming

To enable interoperability features for user presence availability and collaboration, such as the Office Sharing Add-in for Lync 2010 and the Online Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Lync 2010, we recommend that both Microsoft Office 2010 and Lync 2010 are virtualized (sequenced) in the same package.
