Symptoms

Assume that you run a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) command to set a value in the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

For example, you use administrative credentials to run the following command:

Wmic computersystem where name=”%computername%” set AutomaticManagedPagefile=FalseIn this situation, the value of the TimezonekeyName registry entry is changed to a null value.

Note The TimezonekeyName registry entry is located in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation

Cause

This issue occurs because the legacy TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION structure does not include the TimezonekeyName attribute that was introduced in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008. Therefore, the value of the TimezonekeyName registry entry is changed to a null value even if an actual value exists.

Note The legacy TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION structure is used by the GetTimezoneInformation API. When WMI sets a value in the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class, the value of the TimeZoneInformation registry key is refreshed by using the cimwin32!CWin32ComputerSystem::SetTimeZoneInfo function. This function calls the legacy GetTimezoneInformation API to retrieve the existing value and write the existing value back to the TimeZoneInformation registry key.
