SYMPTOMS

Devices such as Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet T-series fax and printer devices (although not necessarily limited to T-series devices) may not work properly. The device may seem slow, or may not respond to commands.

CAUSE

If a program queries for available credits but no credits are available, the program requests credits from the peripheral (in this case, the fax device). When this occurs, the Dot4.sys driver "floods" the peripheral with zero-credit grants. These are essentially meaningless transactions. However, devices are required to respond to these requests in a timely manner. In some cases, the peripheral can use so much of its processing power in responding to these requests that it cannot process valid requests.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
