Symptoms

When you use the ONLINE option to rebuild an index in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the operation fails, and the following error message is logged in the SQL Server error log:
<date><time> spid<spid> Error: 5180, Severity: 22, State: 1.
<date><time> spid<spid> Could not open File Control Bank (FCB) for invalid file ID 29440 in database 'dbname'. Verify the file location. Execute DBCC CHECKDB.

Cause

This issue occurs because the B-tree nodes of the index are shrunk incorrectly if the insert mode for B-tree traversal is used.

Resolution

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Workaround

To work around this issue, run an offline index rebuild instead of an online index rebuild.
