Event ID 258 is logged on all machines

Symptoms

 

Event ID 258 from Microsoft-Windows-Defrag is recorded in the Application event logs every 2 hours on all the machines in your environment.

When you launch Disk Defragmentor, a warning is shown:

         Disk Defragmenter was scheduled using another program

         Disk Defragmenter is currently scheduled using customized settings created by another program. Before you can modify the schedule,

         you must remove the customized settings.

 

Cause

The Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM) Base OS Management Pack includes a file fragmentation monitor to all logical disks, which scans all the computers every 2 hours and performs fragmentation analysis.

Resolution

Disable the Logical Disk Monitoring in the SCOM Base OS Management Pack to stop automatic Defrag Analysis.
